Headaches, congested sinuses, a runny nose, and itchy eyes from allergies are no fun! They may not be life-threatening, but these symptoms are sure to reduce your quality of life. Whether you are struggling with seasonal allergies, food allergies, or any other type, all-natural allergy relief is what you need in your life.
The never-ending cycle of getting allergies and stuffing your purse with Claritin and Zyrtec is not a solution that gets to the root of the cause. So I’m here to help you out!
Did you know allergies are a result of underlying imbalances or dysfunction in the body? AND you can address your allergies naturally by fixing the root cause! Many people just think you have to deal with allergies forever. That’s not true!
In my practice, I often see a strong association between gut imbalances and allergies, especially candida overgrowth. There are tons of things that can predispose you to dysbiosis, specifically the overgrowth of candida, but common culprits include frequent and long-term antibiotics, birth control, steroids, and environmental toxins.
I’ll give you tips on quick all-natural allergy relief as well as longer-term tips to implement into your life, so they don’t come back, or at least reduce your symptoms so you can go about your day without a congested nose or headache getting in the way.
Allergies are due to hypersensitivity of the immune system. This means your immune system gets put on overdrive, causing damaging responses that can affect your whole body. Some of the most common triggers of allergies are pollen found outdoors, pet hair, dust inside, or particular foods.
The allergy symptoms you experience are actually your body reacting to histamine, a chemical compound discharged from mast cells and basophils in response to foreign particles. Exposure to triggers such as grasses, weeds, and tree pollen during allergy season prompts the release of histamine, triggering a series of symptoms.
An overactive immune response and excess release of histamine in response to seasonal antigens is what drives allergy symptoms. Allergy symptoms occur by either your body creating an overproduction of histamine or the body’s inability to clear histamine out.
You can read more about excess histamine, histamine intolerance, and mast cell activation syndrome HERE.
Oftentimes, when people struggle with allergies, it’s because their gut is damaged, which results in an overactive immune system and excess histamine. In fact, the gut impacts pretty much your overall health! So, if you are struggling with poor gut health, other issues will manifest like skin issues, hormone imbalances, and ALLERGIES!
The first thing I investigate with my clients who have allergies is their gut health. I also use additional testing to know if other imbalances might be causing allergies. Testing gives greater insight into what might be causing allergies. Did you know your stool can show imbalances in the gut and your urine can tell about your toxin exposure? Here are a few tests I like to use to get to the root cause of allergies:
These tests allow you to tailor your lifestyle and your diet during the healing phase. And it helps you know what toxins you need to remove from your environment – when possible – and make lifestyle changes accordingly.
We offer 1:1 consults for TDW Community members to review their test results with my team and come up with a comprehensive healing plan! Your treatment protocol may include a combination of the following. Remember, each treatment protocol is different for each person because we are all so unique!
Here are steps you can take today to reduce allergy symptoms naturally.
While getting to the root cause of your allergies is important for long-term well-being, sometimes you need immediate relief. Here are some of my favorite cleaner products for combating allergy symptoms.
The last thing you want to do is damage your gut more by exposing it to a boatload of toxins every day. When you reduce your toxic load, you’re giving the gut time to heal from leaky gut and lessening the burden on your immune system. Plus, toxic products just exacerbate the inflammation within your body, which makes allergies worse.
We know inflammation can trigger the immune system and allergies, so try limiting inflammatory foods like processed sugar, gluten, dairy, and alcohol.
Instead, munch on nutrient-dense foods and brightly colored vegetables and fruits. Eat the rainbow when it comes to produce!
I find that avoiding conventional dairy is especially helpful as it can cause you to produce excessive mucous. When you have excess mucous it only worsens and exacerbates allergy symptoms.
Not only will these eating habits reduce inflammation, but you will also help your gut heal and balance your immune response to minimize future allergy symptoms.
Of course, outside pollen is CRAZY, but did you know your allergies are also greatly affected by INDOOR AIR? Yep. I highly recommend investing in a HEPA air filter for your home. Place one in your bedroom or the most used place in your home. And don’t forget to replace air filters often!
Also, regular cleaning can do wonders for indoor air quality. Vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered vacuum and wet dusting (a microfiber cloth that is barely damp with water) are two hugely helpful practices.
Finally, take your shoes off inside! No need to track chemicals, dust, dirt, mold, and more in your home.
Healing your gut takes time. But including the following simple but effective changes in your routine can help put a stop to annoying allergy symptoms. Keep these things in mind when you are on your journey toward healing your allergies and enhancing your gut health!
Prioritize stress management. I know this isn’t the easiest to day in the modern world, but if you’re under stress, this can contribute to an imbalanced gut. Plus, your body will put its energy into stress response instead of healing. If you don’t know where to start, start here: How to Naturally Support Your Nervous System.
I hope these all-natural allergy relief tips help you not just deal with your allergy symptoms, but experience relief and healing altogether! Remember, consistency is key. Stick with your healthy habits and your health will thank you for it.
