You’ve probably seen information about PEMF therapy circulating in the wellness world, but you might be wondering what is PEMF therapy and how do I do it?! And what does it really help with?!
I can’t wait to share! This is a therapy that has honestly blown me away in terms of personal benefit. While the science behind it makes sense, I can absolutely speak from experience as well!
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. The earth’s core generates electrical currents that create a magnetic field, and PEMF has electromagnetic waves that mimic the earth’s natural electrical currents. PEMF devices send those grounding waves in bursts at different frequencies throughout your body to return it to a more natural state. The effect is healing and refreshing.
While frequency refers to the number of waves per second, intensity is the measure of the size of each wave. The frequency and intensity of a wavelength determine the effect of the wavelength on the body. PEMF therapy makes use of low-frequency waves that penetrate the skin and stimulate the muscles and tissue. However, it does so without changing or damaging the tissue.
PEMF waves are both EMF and ELF. EMF refers to electric and magnetic fields, and ELF stands for extremely low frequency.
Strong EMF radiation from things like cell phones, x-rays and even microwaves, etc. is worrisome. It is unnatural and has the ability to alter and damage cellular function within the body.
PEMF frequencies are different from the aforementioned EMFs. PEMF operates at a very low frequency. Most are between 50 and 60 Hz. For reference, that is a lot lower than the average cell phone or microwave, which can generate EMFs from 2 to 40 GHz on average.
PEMF frequencies are similar to the electromagnetic frequencies you experience in nature, which means your cells are not negatively affected but instead restored and enhanced.
I use the HigherDOSE PEMF mat (use code TAYLOR15) as my choice for PEMF therapy. I purchased the product after brain surgery with the intention and hope of healing my nervous system. At the time, I bought it with my own money and had no affiliation with the company. Only high hopes! And after nearly a year of using the mat, I can testify that it absolutely blew my expectations out of the water.
The HigherDOSE PEMF mat combines both PEMF and infrared therapy, which provides the ultimate experience in healing, relaxation and deep tissue repair. The mat also contains 20 lbs of crystals which, when heated, produce negative ions. Negative ions can act as antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals in the air and improving serotonin levels.
The HigherDOSE PEMF mat has four different settings which can be used for different aims. Lower level settings are more relaxing, and higher levels are more stimulating. Let’s walk through the four levels the mat offers:
Delta brain waves are often seen in the brain when the body is in a deep sleep. The Level 1/Delta setting is for deep relaxation. It can aid with falling asleep and/or staying asleep. It allows brain activity to slow down dramatically, which can facilitate intrinsic healing and renewal. Level 1 helps restore the body back to equilibrium.
Uses: Restorative Before bed to help you fall asleep. In the waking hours, Level 1 is useful if you are feeling anxious and imbalanced. It helps your body return to its natural flow.
The earth’s natural frequency is 7.8 Hz, which is also known as the Schumann Resonance. 7.8 Hz is also the Theta brain wave, which is again seen during sleep. The level 2 setting allows users to mimic the vibration of nature within the walls of their own home!
Uses: Grounding When you’re feeling disconnected or overstimulated, especially from technology usage. Level 2/Theta setting provides a grounding frequency, so if you’re unable to get outside, this setting can be used for grounding, reconnecting, balancing and stabilizing. Further, the Theta brainwave promotes deeply creative insights, enhanced learning, memory and improved stress tolerance. So Level 2 is a fabulous setting when trying to access the creative brain.
Alpha is exactly in the middle of the brain wave spectrum. It is seen during meditation and wakeful relaxation.
Uses: Relaxing The Level 3/Alpha setting can promote mindfulness and presence. It is also effective at reducing the physical effects of stress and increasing tissue regeneration. Use this setting for relieving tension and moving into a state of relaxation.
Beta brain waves happen in waking hours during times of alertness and focus. The Level 4/Beta setting promotes improved mental function, sharper focus and better memory.
Uses: Focus-Enhancing This setting is perfect to beat the midday slump or any type of sluggishness. It helps with mental clarity and concentration. Note that Level 4 should be avoided before bedtime or during times of anxiousness.
It really is just about as easy as simply turning the mat on and laying on it!
You can simply do 20-30 minutes per session and feel a difference. I find this is often easiest by starting the day and ending the day with a PEMF therapy session. Starting with one session per day for 10 minutes is a great spot to begin.
The HigherDOSE PEMF mat has the pre-programmed options outlined above, which makes it easy and convenient to target your needs. However, you may find after time and trial that your body does well with a slightly different frequency than that which is programmed. Do what works the best for your body!
After having brain surgery and being diagnosed with brain cancer, I struggled greatly with sensory overload and difficulty with sleep. These were new struggles to me. I never previously had trouble with falling asleep, overwhelm, overstimulation or anxiety.
After researching the science, I bought the HigherDOSE PEMF mat in hopes it might help restore my brain to a more balanced state. I was hopeful it could be a piece of the healing puzzle. And y’all, it has more than exceeded my hopes. Truly, it may be my most impactful therapeutic measure since brain surgery in terms of healing my nervous system.
Of note, I have both the full-sized mat and the smaller Go-mat. I personally like the full-sized mat as my entire body fits on it (I am 5’2” and find it more relaxing), making it especially helpful on my tough nights. I literally lay down on top of the mat in order to fall asleep. The smaller Go-mat is great if you want to habit stack, as it can be used while sitting at your desk. I have used it in my bed, to help me get to sleep at times. It is not necessarily comfy to sleep on but it helps me get to sleep and for that I am grateful!
Whether your struggle is with anxiety, overwhelm, inflammation, insomnia, stress or beyond, I can recommend the HigherDOSE PEMF wholeheartedly with absolute confidence. PEMF therapy is certainly not meant to be a stand-alone treatment, but it should be used in combination with several other therapeutic and lifestyle measures in order to regulate the nervous system. For more information on regulating the nervous system, you’ll want to read How to Naturally Support your Nervous System.
I hope this article helps you understand some of the mechanisms behind PEMF therapy, and I sincerely hope you are able to experience the incredible benefits yourself.
