When we decided to move to a farm in Texas, we knew we wanted more than just land and open skies – we wanted a home that felt healthy from the inside out.
As a functional medicine nurse practitioner, I’ve always believed that clean living isn’t just about what we eat or put on our skin. It’s also about the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the spaces we live in everyday.
Before moving in, we took a full month to update our new home with wellness in mind. We made intentional, non-toxic choices in every room – and I’m so excited to share those with you.
Whether you’re renovating or just swapping one product at a time, this Healthy Home Edit is for you – including what we picked, why we picked it, and how you can start making simple upgrades in your own space.
Why it matters:
Most paints release harmful chemicals called VOCs (volatile organic compounds). These can harm human health by irritating the eyes, nose, and throat – and even disrupt hormone balance.
Most people get a headache or feel nauseous or dizzy after painting and it is because of the VOC. Paints off gas primarily in the first 6 months, but even up to 10 years!
What we used:
We repainted all walls and ceilings as well as stained the floors. We chose ECOS for every surface – they’re non-toxic, zero-VOC, water-based and safe for even the most sensitive people.
There is no “down time,” and you can’t even smell paint while it’s being applied. Plus, they have gorgeous color options and are even able to color match shades you like from other brands.
Our home color picks:
Why it matters:
Traditional lawn care products are often loaded with synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers that can harm soil health, pollute waterways, and pose risks to kids, pets, and pollinators.
I’m a big believer in barefoot grounding – for myself and for my kids. Choosing non-toxic lawn care helps create a healthy outdoor environment that keeps harmful chemicals off our skin and out of our home.
How I Use It:
My husband uses Sunday’s non-toxic lawn care system seasonally, applying their custom nutrient blends based on our soil test results.
It’s simple: he just attaches the pouch to a hose and sprays. No harsh chemicals, no guesswork – just clean, plant-based nutrients that support a thriving, chemical-free yard my family and farm animals can enjoy.
Why it matters:
Most conventional wallpapers are made with vinyl, glues, and inks that can off-gas harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), impacting indoor air quality for months after installation.
Choosing low or no-VOC wallpaper, like Sandberg’s, supports a healthier home environment – especially important in bedrooms, nurseries, and spaces where you spend a lot of time. Their papers are sustainably made, free of harmful toxins, and printed with water-based inks.
How I Use It:
I used Sandberg wallpaper in my own office to add an intentional, timeless design without the chemical load. Specifically, I went with the Trellis Garden design in Green.
I can’t touch on a healthy home without mentioning Wi-Fi. Constant exposure to wireless radiation (aka EMFs – electromagnetic fields) is unhealthy. Emerging research suggests prolonged exposure may impact sleep quality, cellular stress, and even hormone regulation, especially in sensitive individuals or children.
Creating a healthier home doesn’t mean eliminating technology – but it does mean being mindful of how often and how close we’re exposed. Simple shifts like turning off routers at night, keeping devices out of the bedroom, or using hardwired connections when possible can support a healthier environment.
What we’re doing:
We decided to hardwire our house in order to reduce Wi-Fi exposure. And because we decided to have an option for Wi-Fi (to accommodate guests, events, business needs), we also have a whole house Wi-Fi kill switch from Tech Wellness.
We will also be having an expert in EMF space come to our home in order to determine any needs or spaces that might be improved to mitigate EMF exposure.
Why it matters:
Choosing non-toxic tableware and food storage is a simple but powerful way to reduce daily exposure to harmful chemicals.
Many conventional plates, utensils, drinkware, and tupperware – especially those made from plastic – can leach BPA, phthalates, microplastics, and other endocrine disruptors into your food and drinks, particularly when heated, scratched, or used over time. These chemicals are linked to hormone imbalance, gut issues, and long-term health concerns.
Safer, non-toxic alternatives include:
By switching to these materials, you’re minimizing chemical exposure, supporting better long-term health, and making more sustainable, eco-conscious choices.
What I got:
Why it matters:
Traditional non-stick cookware can release harmful chemicals into food when heated. Caraway uses ceramic coating that’s free of PFAS, PFOA, and other toxins. You get the best of both worlds – no toxins, but still non-stick!
What’s in our kitchen:
Bonus: Caraway Cookware looks beautiful, too. You won’t mind leaving these out or serving directly from the pan. Function, style, and a few less dishes – yes, please!
While installing a whole-house filtration system is a major undertaking, it’s totally manageable to enjoy the benefits of clean water by installing a filtration system under your kitchen sink and using shower/bath filters at the site.
Why it matters:
Tap water can contain heavy metals, chlorine, traces of pharmaceuticals, pathogens, and other things you don’t want in your body. Clean water is a huge part of a healthy home.
What we use:
We initially tested our water quality via NTL and then installed a professional-grade Reverse Osmosis water filtration system under the kitchen sink in addition to the already-existing whole house filtration system.
We used a local company – Shelton’s – for our RO system, and I couldn’t have loved them more. If you can’t find a local company, I also love Aquasana (use code AQTDW50) water filters.
If you want a high-impact upgrade, a kitchen sink RO system is a great place to start, as it will purify your everyday cooking and drinking water.
Note: I want to point out that often a whole-house system is easiest to install when building a home (or majorly renovating), and an under-sink reverse osmosis system is a great option for existing homes.
Why it matters:
Bath water can contain chlorine and other irritants. The Canopy Filter makes bath time safer – especially for little ones with eczema-prone or sensitive skin. (If that’s you/your child, check out How to Naturally Heal Eczema.) Bonus, has a temperature indicator, too!
Why we love it:
It’s a quick, easy switch that makes a real difference in the softness of my boys’ skin. No whole house filtration needed!
As mentioned above, we dedicated an entire room to all things healing, movement, and wellbeing. The room was renovated to bring in a lot more natural light, and we’re filling it with my favorite “health heavy hitters” including:
Why it matters:
Infrared saunas help with detox, stress relief, circulation, and immune health. This has been a personal favorite detox practice for me through the years, and one of the first “splurge” items I’d encourage others to purchase!
What we did:
We’re building our Sunlighten Infrared Sauna right into our wellness space (yes, we dedicated an entire room to wellness!). I went with Sunlighten’s mPulse 2-seater and purchased these items in addition:
Why it matters:
Red/NIR light – such as from the Sunlighten Red Light Therapy Panel – has massive benefits that are super holistic. I love that the benefits span from deep in the body to the surface of the skin, and you can use it to “target” specific areas or for just general full body wellness.
Some of the benefits include:
How I use it:
Why it matters:
Cold therapy is great for energy, inflammation, and mental toughness. I chose the Cold Life Cold Plunge because it has a smaller footprint, I prefer to sit upright when I cold plunge, and it’s more affordable than many other models.
How we use it:
I like to incorporate cold plunge into the morning side of my routine – and it’s especially powerful when paired with sauna use. Hot/cold cycling is a wellness game-changer for lymphatic flow and deeper detox.
Why it matters:
Ozone therapy is a powerful support to the body’s natural healing processes. By delivering a highly reactive form of oxygen (O₃), ozone can help increase oxygen efficiency in the body, promote mitochondrial health, support detox pathways, and modulate the immune response.
I use it to reduce inflammation, support circulation, and even target pathogens. For those of us focused on root-cause healing and cellular health, ozone can be a powerful tool when used safely and intentionally.
How I use it:
I use my ozone machine for at-home insufflations, ozonated water, and targeted treatments – always starting low and slow. Once you learn the machine, it’s an incredibly simple modality for healing!
Why it matters:
Gentle rebounding – or jumping on a small trampoline – is one of the most effective ways to stimulate the lymphatic system. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no pump of its own, so movement is essential for flow.
Rebounding is low-impact, easy on the joints, but still gets the lymph flowing – important for detoxification, immune support, and inflammation regulation. It also supports bone density. All in just a few minutes a day.
How I Use It:
I use a Bellicon Rebounder in my wellness room for 5-10 minutes at a time. It’s great first thing in the morning or as a midday reset. Gentle, yet deeply energizing. Bonus, my boys love to take turns on it, too!
This is a newer addition to our wellness room, and I’m so excited to be incorporating weight training into my life after a brief break while recovering from brain surgery and my Lyme flare.
I try to weight train around 3 days a week for its incredible benefits, particularly for women:
Why it matters:
Clean air is foundational to restorative sleep and overall health. The Austin Air HEPA filter removes airborne contaminants like dust, allergens, mold spores, and VOCs, creating a low-tox environment that supports deep detox and recovery during sleep.
Especially for those with allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities, purified air can dramatically improve sleep quality and immune function.
Best Tips for Use:
Why it matters:
Many mattresses release toxins through flame retardants and synthetic foams. Avocado mattresses are Greenguard Gold Certified for low emissions and Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verified.
What we’re using:
Why it matters:
GOTS certified and Greenguard Gold Certified, Savvy Rest is a company I trust completely when it comes to quality. Their mattresses are fully customizable according to firmness preference – utilizing different layers of organic latex to get a truly tailored feel. No glues, zero chemicals.
What we’re using:
Why it matters:
We spend so much time with our sheets directly against our skin (or breathing into them!), so it’s one of the first non-toxic swaps I suggest others to make. Boll & Branch’s sheets are made with organic cotton and feel so luxe.
What we’re using:
Why it matters:
Traditional cleaners are full of hidden toxins – irritants the eyes, respiratory system, and even hormones. Some conventional cleaning chemicals have even been linked to cancer. Branch Basics keeps it simple and safe with one concentrate that does it all.
What we use it for:
It’s been a forever favorite in our home. If you’re looking to reduce toxic exposure, make this switch to Branch Basics cleaner your first – and maybe most impactful – move.
Why it matters:
It uses only steam – no chemicals – to sanitize and deep clean. Let me say that again: chemical-free sterilization and deep cleaning! This was one of my first must-haves when we moved into the new home. I knew we’d use it for everything…and we have.
What we clean:
I do want to note that we will not be using the LadyBug to clean our floors and walls, as that is contraindicated, having just stained and painted the floors and walls. We don’t want to risk warping/damaging the new paint.
This renovation wasn’t about being perfect. It was about improvement. Every choice we made asked the question: How can this space promote health?
Huge shoutout to Provender Homes, with whom we worked on our renovation. They didn’t specialize in non-toxic design, but they were totally willing to tackle the non-toxic project and were amazing at learning alongside us!
If you’re just starting your low-tox journey, take it one room at a time. Small swaps can lead to big changes in how your home supports your health.
Helping you get your gut right, improve energy, boost immunity, balance hormones, sleep better and look + feel your best
