The bathroom is one of the easiest places to get overwhelmed when you start trying to create a healthier, lower-tox home.
Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, hand soap, toilet paper, cleaning products, shower water… Suddenly you’re looking around wondering if you need to throw everything away and start over.
You don’t.
I always recommend making swaps slowly when you run out of what you already have. Creating a healthier home doesn’t have to happen overnight, and I don’t think living in fear of every ingredient or product is healthy either.
Instead, think about the things you use every single day and start there. Your bathroom is actually one of the easiest rooms to tackle because most of these products need to be replaced eventually anyway.
Here are some of the swaps I would prioritize.
Yes, we’re starting with toilet paper. 😂
Conventional toilet paper probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about reducing unnecessary exposures in your home, but it’s something you’re using on a very sensitive area of your body multiple times every single day. I know this may not be part of the budget, but if you’re ready to take the plunge, it’s a simple effective swap!
I prefer bamboo toilet paper that’s fragrance-free and made without unnecessary dyes or added scents. Bamboo is also a fast-growing resource, so it can be a great option from an environmental perspective.
I like the brands Caboo, REEL and Betterway. I think subscriptions are the best way to go with toilet paper!
We talk a lot about filtering the water we drink, but what about the water we’re showering in every day?
Depending on your water supply, shower water can contain chlorine and other compounds that may contribute to dry or irritated skin and hair. A quality shower filter can help reduce certain contaminants before the water reaches you.
Two options I like are Aquasana and Jolie. I also think filtering bath water is huge – especially if you have little ones or you like taking baths. I like this one from Amazon or Canopy has a great option!
If a whole-home water filtration system (code AQTDW50 for 50% off) isn’t realistic for you right now, starting with the water you drink and the shower you use every day can be a much more approachable first step. I’ve also heard great things about CWR and their water filtration systems.
Hair products are another important thing to swap because shampoo and conditioner come into contact with your scalp and skin regularly.
I personally look for products without synthetic fragrance and unnecessary ingredients, while still making sure they actually work. Because let’s be honest — a “clean” shampoo isn’t very helpful if you hate using it.
And remember, you don’t need to throw away the bottles currently sitting in your shower. Finish what you have, and when it’s time to reorder, try a cleaner option.
Some brands that I love include:
Think about how many times a day your family washes their hands. This is one of those small swaps that adds up simply because you use the product so frequently.
I like choosing a simple hand soap without unnecessary dyes or artificial fragrances.
You can also use Branch Basics (code TAYLORDUKESWELLNESS) concentrate to simplify the number of products you keep around the house. I love products that can serve multiple purposes because it means fewer bottles, fewer ingredients to think about, and less clutter under the sink.
Other brands I like include Kosmatology (code TAYLOR10), Koala Eco, Attitude, Branch Basics Hand Soap (code TAYLORDUKESWELLNESS) and Primally Pure (code TAYLORDUKES).
Your oral-care routine is another area worth paying attention to because these products are going directly into your mouth at least twice a day.
For toothbrushes, a bamboo toothbrush can be an easy way to reduce plastic in your routine.
For toothpaste and floss, I like RiseWell (code TAYLORDUKES). When choosing oral-care products, I want something that supports healthy teeth and gums while avoiding unnecessary ingredients.
Easy swaps:
This one isn’t a product swap, but it may be one of the most important things on this list.
Bathrooms naturally create a LOT of moisture, especially if multiple people are taking hot showers every day. Persistent moisture can encourage mold and mildew growth, which is why ventilation matters.
Run your bathroom exhaust fan while showering and for a while afterward, leave the door open when appropriate, and address leaks or recurring condensation rather than ignoring them.
If your bathroom consistently stays humid, consider adding a dehumidifier and using a basic humidity monitor so you actually know what’s happening in the space.
Toilet bowl cleaner is one of those products that makes you realize just how intense conventional cleaning products can be. If you’ve ever opened a bottle and immediately been hit by the smell, you know what I mean. 😂
You can actually easily make your own natural & effective toilet bowl cleaner. Here’s an amazing article with four different homemade cleaners.
As for brands, I like Blueland Toilet Bowl Cleaner Tablets or you can use the Branch Basics concentrate (code TAYLORDUKESWELLNESS).
You really don’t need 10 different cleaners under your bathroom sink.
One for the mirror. One for the counter. One for the shower. One for the sink. One for the floor…
I love Branch Basics (code TAYLORDUKESWELLNESS) because one concentrate can be diluted for different cleaning jobs around your home. It’s an easy way to simplify your cleaning routine while reducing your reliance on heavily fragranced conventional products.
Use it for bathroom counters, sinks, and other appropriate surfaces according to the brand’s instructions.
Less clutter AND fewer products? I’m in.
If I could tell you to remove one unnecessary category from your bathroom, it would be products with fragrance in them.
Plug-ins, aerosol air fresheners, strongly scented cleaning sprays, fragranced trash bags, perfume-heavy soaps — bathrooms can quickly become fragrance overload.
Instead of constantly trying to cover bathroom odors with fragrance, focus on ventilation, cleaning, and moisture control. If you want a good room spray, Primally Pure has an amazing one.
Open a window when possible. Run your exhaust fan. Empty the trash. Wash towels and bath mats regularly. Keep the toilet and drains clean.
Sometimes the best “air freshener” is simply fresh air.
Cleaner shampoo + conditioner
Better hand soap
Bamboo toothbrush
Cleaner toothpaste + floss
Bathroom humidity monitor
Dehumidifier if needed
Branch Basics cleaning concentrate
Remove unnecessary air fresheners + synthetic fragrance
Run the exhaust fan during and after showers
Wash bath mats + towels regularly
Address leaks or recurring moisture
You don’t have to make every swap today. Bookmark this list and come back to it as things run out. A healthier home is built through the small choices you make over time — and your bathroom is a great place to start.
